The Philadelphia Eagles put in one of the most comprehensive big-game performances when they won the Super Bowl this year. It was the fifth Super Bowl for the Eagles, and their only win to date was against the New England Patriots in 2017. This time, they thoroughly defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, two-time defending champions. It was arguably one of the most memorable triumphs in NFL history. Are there any other Philly teams that can rival them?
Philadelphia Eagles 2024 Super Bowl
The Philadelphia Eagles have 43 players in their 20s and set a new NFL record by scoring 95 points across the conference championship and Super Bowl. It was the only team other than the Kansas Chiefs to beat nine playoff opponents and win the Super Bowl.
Pennsylvania sports betting in February exceeded any other month in the state’s sports betting history. Many sports bettors bet on the Eagles to win.
Philadelphia Eagles 2017 Super Bowl
The Eagles have won one Super Bowl before in franchise history. The team claimed the title during the 2017 season when it beat the Patriots. The only losses on the road were against Kansas City and Seattle. These are two of the most challenging venues of the NFL.
Nick Foles found his stride in the postseason and won MVP of the game with great passes and touchdowns. The Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 with a play by Brandon Graham helping to win the game. The team earned 79 points in total in the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. These were two of the three highest-scoring outputs in the season.
The team may have started as underdogs, but they became champions. The late-season run doesn’t negate the fact that it was a great team.
Sixers in 1983
When looking at championship winners going back to 1970, the first team that comes to mind is the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. They swept their way through the playoffs, winning against some of the best teams in NBA history. They only lost one game in the postseason and beat the Lakers in the final. The Lakers team included Magic Johnson, with his inspiring fitness levels, and two NBA titles already under his belt.
When adding up all the games, the Sixers had 77 wins out of 95 games. This is an 81% percent of games won, which would be hard for any other Sixers team to replicate. It was one of the most dominant professional basketball teams the city has ever seen.
Flyers in 1974/75
The Philadelphia Flyers are a highly regarded team and the first expansion team to win consecutive Stanley Cups. The 1970s Flyers were known as the “Broad Street Bullies,” because of their intimidating style of play. However, it was the 1974 Flyers that changed what it was like to be a sports franchise.
The 1974 team beat the Boston Bruins led by Bobby Ore 4-3 to win the Stanley Cup 1974. The Stanley Cup is one of the sports events in 2025 that fans will be looking forward to, and the final will take place in June.
The 1974-75 Flyers had the best record in the league, with 51 wins and 113 points. This team featured Hall of Fame players such as Bill Barber, Bernie Parent, and Bobby Clarke. Bobby Clarke and Bernie Parent played some of their best hockey, and Dave Schultz racked up the penalty minutes. It was a team that captured the imagination of the City. Over a period of three months from October to January, it never once left the ice in defeat.
Phillies in 2008
This team tends to generate nostalgia as it broke a championship drought. It may have seesawed from first to second place throughout the summer, but no one remembers that. What they do remember is that the team finished strong and played their best baseball when it really mattered.
In September, they went 17-8 to erase a 3.5-game deficit in the National League East. They dominated postseason with an 11-3 in the playoffs and never faced elimination. They may have been a little lucky in their matchups but this doesn’t take away from their dominance.
